Royal Decree 742/2013 establishes the technical and health criteria for public swimming pools in Spain, including the mandatory Self-Monitoring Protocol for Swimming Pools. Its objective is to protect the health of users from physical, chemical, and microbiological risks.

Who should have the Pool Self-Monitoring Protocol?
All public swimming pools in Spain
- Type 1: Swimming pools whose main purpose is aquatic activity, such as public pools, water parks or spas.
- Type 2: Swimming pools that complement another activity, such as hotels, campsites or health centers.
In some autonomous communities it is also mandatory in the
- Type 3A: Swimming pools of homeowners associations, rural houses or agritourism, university residences or similar.

What is the Pool Self-Monitoring Protocol and why is it mandatory?
The technical and health document that establishes the procedures for water control, maintenance, safety, and cleaning of a swimming pool. Royal Decree 742/2013 requires all swimming pools for public use to have this protocol in place to guarantee the protection of users and prevent risks.
Which swimming pools are required to comply with Royal Decree 742/2013?
All public or collective use swimming pools in Spain (types 1 and 2), including hotels, campsites, spas, sports centers, water parks or municipal swimming pools.
